Following the County Council meeting in Hertfordshire this week the Liberal Democrats have launched a petition against the 10,000 signatures required on a petition to force a debate. Liberal Democrats feel the 1,000 is a more achievable and democratic figure.

New rules which would allow people signing petitions to be heard more clearly at county hall have been weighted to make it almost impossible for most communities to reach the threshold for signatures.

Liberal Democrats in Hemel Hempstead are celebrating a big gain as Dr Richard Grayson moved into second place, while the Labour Party fell apart. In a seat which was supposed to be one of Labour's main targets for a win, Richard Grayson's vote went up by 6%, while Labour lost nearly 20%.

Friends of the Earth today announced the tally of candidates who have signed their climate change pledge. To date, 224 Green candidates, 211 Liberal Democrats, 109 Labour candidates, and 4 Conservative candidates have signed. In Hemel Hempstead, Richard Grayson was the only candidate to sign. Commenting on the general election campaign, the Lib Dem candidate in Hemel Hempstead, Dr Richard Grayson, today said: "There has a tremendous response in Hemel throughout the campaign. We are winning over people who have previously always voted either Labour or Conservative, and we are also gaining many people who want to help our campaign.

Last night was the final of the three televised Leaders' debates. Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Nick Clegg, debated with Gordon Brown and David Cameron about the economy. Subjects discussed included breaking up the banks, creating more jobs and reinvigorating the British economy.
