Incineration the Liberal Democrat Position

8.06.45am GMT Tue 9th Mar 2010

Derek Scudder, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson on Waste said: 'We agree that the New Barnfield site is unsuitable for any sort of waste management facility. The Liberal Democrat group at County hall has consistently opposed the use of the site and on a number of occasions has put forward motions to that effect. The ruling Tory group has always voted these down.

We also agree that recycling is the most important aspect of waste management and that every effort should be made to maximise recycling before any other method of waste treatment is used. The collection of waste and recycling is the responsibility of the ten districts and boroughs within the county and they work together to increase recycling rates and also to minimise waste, which is at least as important as recycling.'

Opposition Leader Chris White said: 'Liberal Democrat Party Policy states: "We will not allow new municipal incinerators unless they can be shown to be the best environmental option after considering all alternatives where waste reduction, reuse and use as bio digestion are not possible."'
