A Second Tram Route Across Manchester - One of the Longterm Benefits of Vince Cable's Industrial Strategy
A new tram line through Manchester city centre was opened on 26th February 2017. This now completes Manchester's Metrolink expansion program. The new 1.3km stretch directly through the city centre has now resulted in over 60 miles of routes with 93 stops which makes the light rail network the largest in the UK.

Key Element of North of England Rail Improvement Put in Place in Manchester.
The important rail infrastructure project known as the Ordsall Chord was given funding in 2011 by the Coalition Government as part of its economic recovery programme aimed at repairing the damage to UK caused by the Anglo-American Banking Crash. It was one of a package of rail improvement projects, among many others, announced by Rt Hon Norman Baker, the then Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport, at the Liberal Democrat Conference in Birmingham in September 2011.
